The Indian Orthodox Church has been in existence in India for the last two thousand years. Throughout the history of the Church, there have been spiritual organizations, such as the Mission Society and the Mission Board, that have fulfill her mission or evangelical outreach in India.

A commitment to sharing the Apostolic faith and traditions of the Holy Church is not only a witness to the catholicity of the Orthodox Church, but also a precious token of love to those of other Christian traditions or none at all. In each generation the Church fathers have faced the challenges of their age, but this inexhaustible spiritual nourishment has never failed to sustain and strengthen those who feast on it.

According to the Malankara Orthodox Church Mission Board Constitution adopted in 1979, each parish should have a Mission Unit [Suvishesha Sangham] to fulfill the Mission of the Church. The primary objective of this spiritual organization is to share the Apostolic Orthodox faith and traditions to Non-Orthodox Christians and Non-Christians around us, which we call in our modern term, Evangelism.

The St.Thomas Orthodox Cathedral of Houston, Texas has this evangelism mindset and was blessed by the Metropolitan of the Diocese of South-West America, H.G. Alexios Mar Eusebius, to start a new spiritual organization called "St.Thomas Mission" at a meeting held at the Diocesan Center on June 13,2016. The Parish General Assembly of St.Thomas Orthodox Cathedral approved this request on June 26,2016 with the understanding that the main goal of this organization is to be a witness to the Gospel both domestically and internationally. This group will work on local service projects to benefit the community in which we live along with supporting the Evangelical mission of the Church in India and other countries as much as possible.

The first meeting of this group was held on the Feast of St. Thomas on July 3, 2016 under the leadership of our Vicar and President, Very Rev. Geevarghis Aroopala, Cor-Episcopa and in the presences of our Assistant Vicars, Rev. Fr. Mammen Mathew and Rev. Fr. Joel Mathew.
